But timber frame construction is about more than the appearance of those heavy timbers. What truly sets a timber frame apart is how those pieces come together.

What is Timber Frame Construction?

Timber frame construction is a building method that uses large wooden posts and beams to create the structural framework of a building. Rather than relying on many smaller pieces of dimensional lumber, as you would find in conventional stick framing, timber framing uses substantial timbers positioned and joined to support the structure.

One of the defining characteristics of traditional timber framing is the way those timbers are connected. The Timber Framers Guild describes timber framing as a specialized form of post-and-beam construction that uses wood joinery, such as mortise and tenon, secured with wooden pegs.

That distinction is important. While the terms “post and beam” and “timber frame” are sometimes used interchangeably, not every post-and-beam structure uses traditional timber frame joinery. Some post-and-beam systems rely heavily on visible metal brackets and fasteners to connect the structural members.

In a traditional timber frame, the joinery itself is part of the craft.

What is Mortise and Tenon Joinery?

Mortise and tenon joinery is a method of fitting two pieces of wood together.

The mortise is a carefully cut opening or pocket in one timber. The tenon is the shaped end of another timber, cut to fit into that opening. When the two pieces come together, the tenon fits into the mortise, creating an interlocking connection. A hardwood peg is then driven through the joint to secure it.

Think of it a little like putting together a wooden puzzle, except every piece has been carefully laid out and cut to become part of a structural frame.

Mortise and tenon joints can also be adapted to different angles and structural needs, which is one reason the technique works so well in timber frame construction.

And while the basic idea sounds simple, creating a well-fitting joint requires precision. Each connection has to be planned and cut so the timbers come together as intended when the frame is assembled.

The exact joint needed depends on its location, the forces it will carry and the overall design of the frame. In fact, timber framers use a variety of joints and variations beyond the basic mortise and tenon to accommodate different connection needs.

In many types of construction, the structural framework disappears once the project is complete.

Timber Framing vs. Conventional Framing

Conventional framing typically uses smaller dimensional lumber spaced closely together inside the walls and roof. The individual pieces work together to carry the structural load, and most of the framing is covered once construction is complete.

Timber framing uses fewer, much larger structural members. Mortise and tenon joinery allows the posts, beams and braces to interlock, creating strong connections without relying solely on metal fasteners to hold the primary frame together.

The larger timbers can also make it possible to span wider areas with fewer structural members, helping create the open layouts that are often associated with timber frame pavilions, porches and gathering spaces. Because the frame is designed to remain exposed, the structure itself becomes an architectural feature rather than something hidden behind finished walls.

Traditional framing is often faster and more economical for projects where the structure will ultimately be covered. Timber framing requires more specialized planning, precision and craftsmanship, but the result is a structural system that also provides much of the character of the finished space.
